League Rules, Policies and Gameplay

General Information

  • Fall league is 5 weeks long beginning October 6th with the fifth and final week being championship week
  • 4 matches will be played weekly and gameplay is one vs. one
  • Participants will receive a league t-shirt with a custom irons logo!
  • 1st place winners will receive $100 dollars in prize money, next season league fees paid and a championship trophy.
  • 2nd place winner will receive  $50 dollars in prize money and a runner up trophy
  • League fees are $155 for the season and must be payed in advance.
  • League members will receive 20% off of normal gameplay or practice while participating in the league
  • League play open to all ages . Minor must be accompanied by parent or legal guardian

Code of Conduct

Please be courteous to your fellow league members, officiating staff, and spectators. Our goal at The Copper Irons is to offer an exciting and competitive competition in a great environment and while we understand that ax throwing can be highly competitive we expect our members to maintain a high level of sportsmanship throughout the entire competition!

Sportsmanship

We expect all or our participants at The Copper Irons to hold a high level of sportsmanship while participating in competition. Many times during competitive play, disputes may arise for various reason. We ask that our players remain civilized while the disputes are worked out and that participants remain with the same high level of sportsmanship after the dispute is settled. Under no circumstances will intimidation, trash talking, or disrespectful mannerisms be tolerated towards another player, officiating person or a spectator. Any person violating this policy may be immediately removed from the league and permanently banned from the premises. In the event of dismissal all fees will be forfeited and no refunds will be given!

Disciplinary Actions

Disciplinary actions shall follow the below procedure

  •   The offending thrower shall receive a verbal warning for their first offense
  •   Subsequent offensives will result in forfeiture of the immediate game and up to     

                    permanent dismissal from league and future leagues

Safety

Safety of our members is top priority at The Copper Irons. therefore the following requirements must be met.

  •    Every axe must be inspected prior to use for competition. Axe heads must not be loose and must be solid in design. Axe head that are pinned or clamped are not acceptable. Axes must be 3 pound or less total weight and overall lengths from tip of handle to top of head of axe must be between 19 inches and 12 inches in length.
  •    Handles must is good condition and free of cracks, splits and chips.
  •    Participants are allowed 2 styles of throwing, including the one hand over the shoulder throw or the 2 hand over the head throw. All other styles of throwing are not permitted. Unreasonably hard or fast throws are deemed unsafe and shall not be performed. Participants shall only throw from the handle of the axe. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of the match
  •    Under no circumstances are axes to be throw while participants are down range.  Failure to comply will result in forfeiture of the match.

Targets

Targets will be kept in good condition and scoring marks will remain as visible as possible for league play. Boards shall be watered prior to league play and may be watered in between matches. Excessively hard boards may be watered during play at players request. Excessively damaged boards may be replaced during league play and will remain at the officials discretion. No one other than an official shall move or alter the boards in any manner.

Warm ups

League warm ups begin 30 minutes prior to league play. Every player may use the time to warm up for competition and may take up to 5 throws at a time if other players are waiting for turns to warm up. 

Gameplay

  • Participants shall play 4 matches per week
  • Matches are selected at random and may be played against the same person more than once
  • Players shall take 5 throws and switch sides. This ensures fair play among the boards.
  • Matches will be played with 10 throws each.
  • Winner will be determined by the player with the highest score at the end of ten throws. In the event of a tie, sudden death match will ensue.

                            * During sudden death, killshots are only scoring active on board. Players will 

                                throw within 10 seconds of beginning of sudden death match. Sudden death 

                                continue one throw at a time until one players misses the Killshot. In the 

                                event both players miss the killshot, the player closest to nearest edge of

                                 killshot wins. If one player has a drop, the other player wins the match.

  • Scoring shall be kept by players, signed and turned in to official for entry
  • Pauses in gameplay can happen. Generally these are made by an official and for

                  review of rules, score confirmation ect....  Gameplay shall not be held up by players 

                  for excessive cell phone usage.

  • Throwing in a wheelchair is acceptable. All rules apply with the exception that one wheel must remain inside the throwing box until after sticking the axe.


Scoring

  • ringAll matches will be scratch play. No handicaps will be given.
  • Scoring is determined by as the axe rest in the target and should not be removed to determine the score.
  • Points are as follows:
  • Bullseye and black ring around bullseye is 6 point
  • 4 points for 4th ring
  • 3 points for 2nd ring
  • 2 points for 1st ring
  • 0 points outside of rings
  • 8 points for killshots, 2 attempts allowed per game and must be called out before being thrown. killshots must be made clear to official and opposing player that attempt is being made. Failure to make clear will result in score being counted as a standard throw. Right and left killshot may only be hit one time per game. If attempt misses killshot player will receive respective value for throw and may attempt that killshot once again. Maximum attempts for killshots is 2 under normal play.
  • In the event of a drop the player will receive no points. If the player drops during a killshot attempt, they will receive no point for that turn but will receive an additional attempt at the killshot

Sudden Death Play

  • Sudden death takes place when 2 players have an equal score at the end of the match.
  • During sudden death play only killshots are in play. Player who hits killshot wins match. In the event both players hit killshot, one more throw will be thrown. official will have a coin toss to decide who goes first. The winner of the coin toss can decide to go first or pass to opponent. Killshot must be called and cannot be changed once call is made ( left or right).  In the event both players miss, player closest to nearest edge of killshot is the winner. Players cannot touch axe before measurements are made. touching the axe before measurements forfeits players game and score. In the event of a drop player will receive no credit for throw and therefore opposing player only needs to stick to win.


Throwing

  • Player must remain inside the throwing box while throwing.  In the event a players foot touches the floor outside of  the box before the axe has come to a complete stop , turn will be counted as a foot fault and score will be zero
  • Players must have at least foot on the floor inside the box during throw.
  • The throws permitted have been discussed above
  • Players shall remain in the box until official has scored the throw. Failure to do so will result in foot fault and a score of 0.

Attendance

  • Players are expected to participate in regular league play. In the event a player cannot make the league play during normal hours, players may make arrangements to throw during normal business hours and their score will played against during normal league play.
  • Players should give as much notice as possible if they cannot make the league play for the day.
  • Players who arrive late or leave early will forfeit any games missed and receive a zero for such. Their opponent will still throw and opponents score will be counted. 
  • Players who miss more than 2 league nights and do not make up the games will not be allowed to participate in any tournaments or championship events.

Tournament and Championship play

  • Players are required to be present at the start of tournament play. Players not present will be offered a 10 minute grace period. Failure to show will forfeit any missed matches. if player arrives in the 10 grace period but has missed first match, player will forfeit first match and have the opportunity to participate in subsequent matches.

Tournaments and Championship Gameplay

  • Championship play shall be ranked by overall wins. Four matches will be played. Normal rules will apply.
